Mbokam AA, Kenya

A washed AA lot from Mbokam Estate, a 2.5-hectare family farm and wet mill in Embu County owned by Arthur and Josephine Mbogo. Sitting at 1,700m on Kenya's fertile central highlands, the estate has been in the Mbogo family since the early 1950s and takes its name from a combination of "Mbogo" (buffalo) and the Kamavindi stream that runs through the property. Josephine runs the farm day-to-day, intercropping coffee with avocado, banana and macadamia and using cattle manure in place of chemical fertiliser. Cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness, pulped, dry-fermented for 16-24 hours, washed in fresh Kamavindi river water, then dried slowly on raised beds for up to three weeks. In the cup: bright, sparkling acidity, ripe nectarine and a honeyed, floral finish.
